CAYENNE/PARIS. Action de F100. black. No 11735. Folds. Formed Paris, 1854, to work gold-bearing lands in French Guyana. Approuague is the name of a river, 335Km long, whose sands held gold, and prompted the first gold-rush in Guyane. The old adventure began about 1853, when an expedition exploring the upper Approuague, brought back some gold. The first prospectors for gold were recruited from among the former slave-owners, who wanted the French Government to recognise them as the only people allowed to exploit the gold deposits. However, this company was granted a concession, and was the first of a number of companies formed over a 30-year period to mine for gold in Guyane's rivers. Conditions were extremely poor at the time. The gold-workers spent most of their earnings just on food, and many lived in poverty, suffering from malnutrition. Very few made a fortune. Mining was primitive - by pick and shovel, and sluice-box. By 1916 the gold was almost exhausted, and mining ended. Later attempts to restart mining came to nothing, with the low price of gold. Extremely rare and of a good early date.
