PARIS/GRANVILLE. 1. Action de F500, green & black. 2. 5 Actions de F500, brown & black. One piece has minor edge-damage at the bottom. Formed Paris, 1853, to merge the activities of two gentlemen, Lecampion and Théroulde, who each had an extensive cod-fishing business on the Grand Banks, off Newfoundland, and other marine transport activities. They each became 50% owners of the company, by contributing their total of 17 fishing-vessels, with salting-plants, warehouses and equipment, on the islands of St.Pierre and Miquelon, and its other assets, based at Granville - a total of 80 vessels. The company was by far the largest in the Grand Banks area - in 1859 it was operating 29 boats there. The Paris office was, appropriately, on the rue du Faubourg Poissonnière, but its headquarters was at Granville, on the west coast of Normandy - well-placed for the liaison with St.Pierre and Miquelon. Much of the cod was shipped by the company to the West Indies. in 1854 Lecampion and Théroulde were granted a monopoly by the Ministry of the Marine to transport 3000 Indians to Guadeloupe and 10.000 to Martinique to provide labour. Also, in 1855, they combined with the Pereire brothers to form the Compagnie Générale Maritime (later the C.G. Transatlantique), in effect the CGM took over the Société Terreneuvienne, and Lecampion and Théroulde were put in control of the new enterprise. Extremely rare.
