Lotnummer: 683
1 Share of £25. black on vellum, seal. No 31. Folds. Founded 1821 with the support of the Marquess of Stafford to provide gas light in the city of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. Liquidated around 1858. The Marquess in question is George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland, Viscount Trentham, Earl Gower and 2nd Marquess of Stafford. He was a British politician, diplomat, landowner and patron of the arts. He is estimated to have been the wealthiest man of the 19th century (surpassing Nathan Rothschild). He played a controversial role in the (Scottish) Highland Clearances, where thousands of tenants were forced out of their home. The first to see the practical use of gas light was William Murdoch, a collaborator of Matthew Boulton and James Watt. He first lit hisown house in 1792. In 1812, the first gas company in the world came into being: the Gas Light and Coke Co. Extremely rare and early date for such a company.
