Lotnummer: 681
Shares of £20. black on vellum. No 165. Left border cut, following the irregular line of the printed panel. Otherwise in excellent condition. Formed London 1825 to mine rock salt at Wharton, south of Northwich, Cheshire. Salt had been mined in the area since the Middle Ages, but earlier mineshad begun to collapse, and this new source, at Wharton, was discovered. For much of the 19th century, this company was the largest producer of salt in the U.K. (and probably in Europe). It had its own refinery near the mines. Its salt was sent mostly to Liverpool and the North of England. Fine arms of the company, showing elements of the salt-mining. Early date and printed on vellum.
