Lotnummer: 292
ST.-THOMAS. BRUXELLES. Certificat au porteur. buff, black. No 584. Large format with folds and edge-splits. Due to the economic crisis at the end of the 1830s and the ambitions of King Leopold I to expand the Belgian kingdom, there was a need to acquire a colony. From the many offers, he finally selected Santo-Thomas de Guatemala in 1840. It turned out into a real disaster because of several reasons, but mainly because of a lack of organisation and the climate causing infectious diseases. In the end, 211 of the 871 colonists had died from a tropical disease in one and a half year (1845-46) and this discouraged many other emigrants. The colony never recovered from this failure, but would only be put to an end in 1856. Extremely rare.
