Lotnummer: 286
BRUXELLES. Action de F100, printer proof. purple, olive, black. #4000. No 13. Fine border with horses, horses' heads, and mythical creatures, and underprint of the arms of Belgium. The company was formed in 1880 with a capital of 400.000 francs divided into 4000 shares of 100 francs. This was the only permanent circus in Brussels. The building could seat 3500 spectators. There was space for some 40 musicians and no less than 110 horses. The arena was mainly used for circus, theatre and ballet, but could also be transformed in a waterpool to play historic water battles.Between 1908 and 1914, the building was exploited as a movie theatre. From 1920 onwards, its main function was circus again. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was the home of Maurice Béjart, the famous ballet dancer and choreographer. Today, the Royal Circus is owned by the city of Brussels and hosts of a wide range of cultural manifestations, organised by the well-known cultural center 'Le Botanique'. The issued shares of this company are known, though not common. What we offer here however, is a unique printer proof share from the Bourlard printer archive. Interestingly, the colours used for this proof are different (purple/olive/black) than on the issued shares (brown/black) hence this printer proof is visually much more appealing. The paper used too, is different (thicker on the proof than on the issued share). All in all, a very attractive share bearing a lot of Belgium’s cultural history.
