BRUSSEL. 4,5% Aandeel (bond) van 500 Ned.Gulden, unissued. black. Large format with folds. Text in Dutch. Previously unseen (unissued) bond of a 1,5 million Dutch Guilders loan to finance the construction of a canal between Pommeroeul and Antoing (Hainaut province). The 26km canal was constructed 1823-1826 by order of King William I and - as evidenced by this bond - with the financial support of the AlgemeeneNederlandscheMij. terbegunstiging van de Volksvlijt, the original name of the illustrious Société Générale de Belgique. The canal was constructed to avoidthat the coal mined from the Borinage mining basin had to travel an expensive maritime route along the French section of the Mons-Condé Canal to reach the river Schelde. To the best of our knowledge, a unique bond from the most famous of all Belgian companies and that from its first, Dutch years. It clearly illustrates the original purpose of the company as laid out by King Willem I upon its foundation in 1822: to stimulate the economic development and industrialisation of the southern part of hisKingdom. A most interesting highlight of Belgian scripophily.
