PEEKSKILL. Cert. of 10 Shares of $5 each. black. Folds and stuck on thick paper to protect the certificate. Vignette of the school. Issued to Cornelius Vanderbilt, the 'Commodore' and one of the richest Americans in history. The Peekskill Academy opened its doors in 1837 to 47 students, both boys and girls. In 1841 the Academy decided to admit only boys. By 1857 the Academy had become the Peekskill Military Academy. The Academy closed its doors in 1968. Cornelius Vanderbilt did not attend the school - he was in fact over 40 years old when it opened. Yet, it looks as if he was one its founders. This was doubtless one of his many charitable investments, the most notable being the foundation of the Vanderbilt University, est. 1873. Vignette of the school.
