OHIO. AKRON. Less than 100 Common Shares, specimen. blue, black. Vignette of two men with tyres. Firestone was founded in Akron, tyre capital of America, in 1900 by Harvey S. Firestone, to sell tyres made by other people. In 1902 he bought a small factory in Akron, to make tyres for carriages, and from 1904 made car-tyres. Harvey Firestone had much in common with Henry Ford, and the two men worked together, Firestone becoming Ford's main supplier. It became America's second largest manufacturer of tyres, producing a wide range for all forms of transport. Its rubber plantations in Liberia are wellknown, and are the largest in the world; plantations are owned also in Philippines, Brazil & Ghana.
