The Champlain and St.Lawrence Railroad was one of the first to be built in Canada. It was intended to cut the time for the trip between Montreal and New York, by allowing a quick 16-mile passage from the St.Lawrence to Lake Champlain, to link shipping at each end. Canada's first locomotive, built by Robert Stephenson, arrived from Britain in 1836. Although freight traffic was never strong, passenger services were very popular. Later, the line, on a modified route, became part of the Grand Trunk Railway and thus the CNR.
