BARCELONA. Accion de Ptas.500. multicolour. No 18809. Very large format, and a most colourful piece, with a great winged horse carrying a beautiful queen through the clouds, and a border with the arms of Barcelona and other cities of Catalunya, served by the company's network. Underprint of a bus. A memorable piece. This was the company which established the first urban bus network in Barcelona. It acquired the concession in 1922. The concession authorised 5 regular lines, as well as special services for bullfights, football, exhibitions, etc. Among the initial shareholders were Vickers and Tilling Stevens, both British manufacturers of buses. There were buses in Barcelona from 1906, but they were like converted carriages, quite unsatisfactory, and did not last long. By 1925, 71 buses served 7 routes, and the network was extremely popular, and a financial success. The buses brought serious competition to the tramway network, and in 1924 the Tranvias de Barcelona bought shares to give it control of the bus company. The 1930s brought a difficult time for the company, with riots and later the Civil War, with difficulties of supply for petrol, and rubber for tyres. It was decided to concentrate on trams and trolleybuses, which did not need supplies of fuel, and the bus company was dissolved in 1940. This exact share was originally sold by us in the mid 1990s and again in 2009. Only this one piece is known to us. An artistic highlight of Spanish scripophily.
