MONACO. Action de F500. yellow, black. #60000. No 27385. Very large format. Central fold and some pin-holes. Monaco had its first casino in 1856. Yet, its success was limited, as well as that of two successor companies. It was only when the S.A. des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers à Monaco was established (1863) that the gambling business took really off. What we offer here is the oldest S.B.M. scripophily we know of; no other 19th century shares or bonds have been seen by us except for the bond in the previous lot. Wonderful share certificate of world famous casino of Monte-Carlo. Superb engravings by Renard of casino, palace, etc. The company was formed in Monaco in 1863. At the time, Monaco was a poor rock of no importance. The new prince decided to attract visitors by providing a fine newcasino, with other attractions. The concession was granted to François Blanc, of Bad Homburg, in 1861, and he formed the 'S.B.M.' to exploit that concession. The company still enjoys this position today. Extremely rare. Not to be confused with later, more common issues of similar design.
