Vignette of a griffin, a legendary creature with the body of a lion but the head and wings of an eagle. Griffens are known for guarding treasures, hence will fit as the symbol for a bank. The IonianBank was a British overseas bank est. 1839 to operate in the Ionian Isles, which was then a British Protectorate. It served as the central bank of the United States of the Ionian Islands and later expanded in Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. The bank's Greek assets were bought by the Commercial Bank of Greece (today part of Alpha Bank) in 1957.
