Receipt of the Exchequer. black. Folds, a few small splits, lower right corner missing, at places rather discoloured paper. A hand-written Exchequer Order (easily readable) for the payment of a daily allowance for a half-year in 1674 (although the Order is dated 1685) to one of the sergeants-at-arms. Signed by the Earl of Rochester (1642-1711), (although the signature is incomplete). He was appointed Lord Chancellor after the accession of James II, but, as he was a firm Anglican, he did not get on well with the new catholic king, and was dismissed in 1687. Extremely early date and us such certainly scarce.
