Watson, the founder, learned his business with National Cash Register. He was dismissed in 1913, and bought a company called Computer-Tabulating-Recording Co., near his home town of Elmira NY. In the 1920s & 1930s IBM completely dominated the market for time-clocks and punch-card tabulators. In the 1930s and 40s it pioneered the electric typewriter. IBM was not the first to see the possibilities of computers, but soon made up losttime, and within a few years completely dominated the market. Today IBM has operations in over 170 countries. It produces and sells computer hardware, middleware and software, and provides hosting and consulting services.
