CALIFORNIA. SAN FRANCISCO. Shares of $10. gold, black, gold seal. No 18. Folds. Photo-vignette of an ostrich, probably known as Bob Fitzsimmons, the largest bird of the ostrich farm according to a 1913 news article. The first ostrich farm in the USA opened in 1886 when the Englishman Edwin Caston imported 50 ostriches from South Africa. They were farmed for their high-quality leather and for the feathers. Moreover, ostrich farms soon became a popular tourist destination, very much operating as a traditional zoo with paying visitors who could feed them and take an ostrich drawn carriage ride. Boys could ride the birds on the back and women could buy leather products and feather hats in the farm's shop. The Ostrich farm company we see here, was est. 1912 in San Francisco through the issue of 7500 shares. In later years, the premises was incorporated into Playland-at-the-Beach, the amusement park at the San Francisco ocean side. First time in our auctions.
