Due to the Civil War, actual construction started in 1872 and the official opening took place in 1874 with over 280 animals on display. Today, these 42 acres zoo hosts more than 1,300 animals and is one of the top 3 zoos in the U.S. Fine vignettes of hunters killing buffalo, also an ocelot, a deer, and an eagle feeding her young. The holder of the bond was entitled to ticket privileges, and to interest of up to 6% per year. This type, issued in 1896, had not been seen by us before and is not listed in the Schmitz/Metzger reference catalogue.
