Souscription de 4fr 11c. Serie B. blue, black. No 1777. A little staining on the front, more on the back. A small format booklet to collect funds for the construction of the Statue of Liberty, as shown on the cover. We also see portraits of US President Washington and two French heroes of the American War of Independence: Marquis de Lafayette and comte de Rochambeau. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French people to the United States to celebrate their 100 years of independence. As proven by the document we offer here, money was indeed collected from thousands of Frenchmen to finance its construction (by sculptor F. Bartholdi and architect G. Eiffel). The Statue, constructed in France and shipped in parts to New York, was dedicated on Oct. 28, 1886 and shows the Roman goddess Libertas, the personification of liberty.
