Tarapaca was the heart of the nitrate-mining area, in the Atacama desert of northern Chile, and this bank was formed to channel British finance to that business. After the development of synthetic fertilisers, the nitrate industry collapsed. The bank finally became part of the Bank of London and South America, and part of the Lloyds Bank group.
