In order to attract customers, they decided to sell a special toffee. The toffee's success enabled Mackintosh to expand the business. The confectionery firm (with brands such as Quality Street and Rolo) became a limited company in 1899. Chocolate production started in 1912. International expansion followed before WWI and by 1914, the company employed some 1,000 people. It benefited from some revolutionary marketing and publicity campaigns.
