BREMEN. Schuldschein über 2000 Mark. Serie 46. brown, blue, black. No 17151. Central fold. Printed by Giesecke & Devrient. A most famous company, founded in Bremen, 1857. Its first service was between Germany and England, in which three steamships were engaged. Transatlantic service started in 1858. It operated luxury liners on the North Atlantic before World War II. The finest of those liners was the 'Bremen' and other famous ships were the Europa, Deutschland, Berlin, New York, Hamburg, Hansa and St.Louis. In 1941 the German government sold its controlling interest to a group of businessmen in Hamburg & Bremen. In 1942 the company was merged with Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt A.G. to form Deutsche-Amerika Line, although the middle of WW2 was not a happy time for ocean liners. Only 4 pieces of this type are known to us.
