He was one of the first to realise the potential of the rocket for space travel, and in 1881 came up with a design for an interplanetary spacecraft. He manufactured bicycles in Berlin, but also built and demonstrated an aircraft, but in 1902 it was clear it could not fly under its own power. Further attempts were unsuccessful and the project was abandoned. He was described as the 'German Edison'.
