In 1955, the Compagnie Foncière des Grands Lacs (Cofolacs) was established in order to centralise all the land properties and claims of the CFL (Chemins de Fer du Congo Supérieur aux Grands Lacs Africains), which also had huge interests in forestry and cattle breeding. CFL received in return 60.000 of the 150.000 shares making up the Cofolacs capital. After the independence of Congo in 1960, the Compagnie Foncière choose the Belgian statute and the Congolese assets were brought into the "Société Foncière des Grands Lacs Africains (Sofolacs)".
