Vignette of Father de Smet talking to Indians. De Smet, born in Termonde, Belgium, in 1801, was a Jesuit missionary who went to America in 1821. He spent all his working years in the west, first in the Pacific Northwest, then on the Great Plains. He was widely known and respected by the Plains Indians, and served many times as a peacemaker between them and the whites. He died in St.Louis in 1873. Signatures hole-cancelled, and a stamp-cancellation, not touching vignette.
