MEXICO. black. This is a decree by the President of Mexico, José Mariano de Salas, to raise funds for the forthcoming war with the USA. The aim was to raise 2 million pesos, through the church structure in Mexico. It stipulates the amount to be raised by each main entity (1 million from the archbishopric of Mexico, 400.000 from the diocese of Puebla, 250.000 from Guadalajara, 170.000 from Michoacan, 100.000 from Oaxaca and 80.000 from Durango). It states how the funds will be used, e.g. for arms, clothing, needs'for mouth and war' and so on, for the Californias, New Mexico and Chihuahua, and for Santa-Anna, of Alamo fame, as commandate of Vera Cruz. Also for various specific garrisons. It lists some 250 individuals who were to receive specific amounts, as lowas 25 pesos, and shows the model letters to accompany each sum of money. The decree begins with a statement from the President to justify this loan, recognising the difficult situation in the Republic, which could threaten its very existence, and the need to raise money to meet the costs of the struggle. A most interesting document, illustrating the forthcoming Mexican-American War (1846-1848), followed in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas. The War ended with the Mexican Cession of the northern territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico to the United States.
