ROMA. Obbligazione di Lire 500. pink, black. No 641724. Several pin-holes. An interesting piece. The company was formed by the Papal States in 1856 to build a rail network in and from the States. In fact, with the political chaos of the 1860s in Italy, a smaller network was eventually formed, merging 3 companies giving lines around Livorno and the Maremma, Rome and Lazio, and a line Rome-Bologna via Ancona. From 1873 to 1882 these lines came under Italian State ownership. Views of Rome, Bologna and other cities, and a very fine Catenacchi border of coats of arms, gods, angels, etc. The bond was issued in 1916 in replacement of an earlier bond issued by the Papal company.
