WÄDENSWIL. Aktie von Fr.500. green, black, buff. No 4780. Folds and a few small edge-splits. Pin-holes. Formed Wädensweil 1890 with capital in 10.000 shares of 500Fr., each reduced in 1920 to 50Fr. By 1870 it was apparent that a line was needed linking Wädensweil on Lake Zürich to the town of Einsiedeln, an important centre of pilgrimage. Work started in 1871, and the line opened in 1872. However, financial difficulties meant that the two communes had themselves to buy the rolling-stock for the line. After the construction of the Gotthard line in 1882, itwas important to link the Wädensweil-Einsiedeln line to the new international one, so this company was formed in 1889. In 1891 the lines Pfäffikon to Samstagen and Bilderbrug to Arth-Goldau were opened. The early years were difficult, but there was renewed hope in 1910 when the CFF opened a line Rapperswil to Wattwil. Thus a link was possible with the Bodensee-Toggenburg line, enabling trains from Lucerne to Lake Constance. The Südost line was electrified 1939/41. Einsiedeln is now served from Zürich S-bahn line 13.
