TIFLIS. 10 Actions de 250 Rbls. red, black. No 18821-30. Text in Russian and French. Founded 1886 by Alexander Ivanovitch Mantaschev (1842-1911), a man of Armenian origin, son of a textile merchant. He became one of Russia's leading men in the oil industry, together with the Nobel and Rothschild families. His firm was transferred into a limited company in 1899 so that more outside capital could be attracted. The company headquarters was in Tiflis, but the oil installations, including two refineries, were of course located in Baku. The company's 1909 turnover amounted to 6.5 million roubles (comparable with 150 million euro today). Later issues of this company, issued in St Petersburg (1913) are well known, but this early type, issued in Tiflis, and representing 10 shares, has not been seen by us before.
