The San Domingos Mine is an open-pit mine in Alentejo. The Romans already mined it for gold and silver, but mining stopped after their departure. In 1855 mining was resumed, especially for copper. In 1859 the mining concession was leased to the English mining company Mason & Barry. They switched from tunnel to open-pit mining in 1867. Copper ore was the main product, but also pyrite (for sulphur). Mine closed 1866 and now a tourist attraction. Printed by Waterlow.
