33 GIRONDE. BORDEAUX. Action de F200. brown, orange. #8250. No 8321. Formed 1919 to take over the established Johnston wine business at Bordeaux. Very fine certificate, with border of grapes, and vignette of a gabare (the traditional Dordogne/Gironde flatboat for transporting wine), loaded with barrels, sailing past Bourg-sur-Gironde. Also arms of Bordeaux and Bourg. The company was formed at the end of the 19th century, under the name 'Grands Vins Mousseux de Bordeaux', to exploit the procedure for preparation of the 'Royal Médoc Mousseux' wine, as created by Nathaniel Johnston, a Bordeaux winegrower, who used to work on the right bank of the Dordogne at Bourg-sur-Gironde, and later at St.Emilion, in 'caves' still used for this purpose. In 1927 the company had to change its name, following new legislation onvins mousseux, and took the Johnston name.
